Callie McDermott
Country of Service:
Community-Based Environmental Volunteer
Years of Service:
2008 - 2010

Callie's favorite moments were with her host family- cooking with her host mom, helping her siblings read and brewing beer with her dad

Callie McDermott was a community based environmental volunteer in Peru from 2008 – November 2010. Callie became interested in joining the Peace Corps when she was thirteen and one of her cousins became a Peace Corps volunteer.  As a volunteer, Callie worked on waste management, environmental health and environmental education. Many of Callie's favorite moments in Peru were with her host family, cooking guinea pig with her host mom, helping her young siblings learn to read, and brewing fermented corn beer, or "chicha," with her host dad. Overall, Callie feels that Peace Corps has made her more confident and given her a chance to really learn about her own strengths and weaknesses. Currently, Callie is readjusting to life in Boston and getting ready to start her job search.
