Boston Area RPCVs gathered to listen to a panel of Volunteers representing all five generations of Peace Corps service and all three geographic regions (Africa, EMA, and IAP).
Steve Ivas (Zaire 79-81) spoke about how Peace Corps taught him to find his passion - environmental work, and the importance of doing your homework, seeking mentors, flexibility, respecting the skills of those around you, and showing up.
Sally Lindover (Rwanda 79-81) encouraged attendees to pursue a career in the US Foreign Service.
Susan Maupin (Morocco 87-89) talked about how she has fused her passions for branding, marketing, advertising and social justice into a related role at Stonyfield Farm.
Lara Phimister (Jordan 99-01) spoke about how she has leveraged working for big corporate law firms to do pro-bono asylum work.
Virginia Swain (Liberia 64-66) spoke about personal life experiences that led her to found the Institute for Global Leadership, and how new leadership models are needed to reconcile current organizational, community and global challenges.
And Shana Yansen (Honduras 97-99) shared her story of channeling Peace Corps experience and passion for the environment into Jute and Jackfruit, her eco-friendly, organic and fair trade clothing company.
All panelists spoke about the importance of networking, finding a strong mentor, doing your research, and following your passion!
